I just finished this one last week. It took a bit for me to settle into the format, but then I was sold. Odd endings of all 17 stories, but fits well in the overall pleasing reading session! I am a Bengali booknerd, often read English titles featuring Bengal and Kolkata by Bengali authors. This was special, a direct savior to my Bengali literature menu.
Biswas Kora Jae Na by Amitav Ganguly is my first pick of the author. After this, I would pick up his English books following almost the same genre. I sighed in appreciation for its mixed story patterns, each story was different and enhanced the suspense better the previous. Let me put it first, the title in English means Cannot be Believed. Hence the stories are ricocheted in such a way that the ending will surprise in the most unusual way.
Short stories! Too good! No pesky unwanted details. The narrative was point to point. It’s such a quick and eerie read. The setting was atmospheric and spooky and the back story of the supernatural research and human experimentation is part of the collection, was so interesting and creepy.
I also love how this book features a few of my favorite horror themes like obsessive curiosity, folk horror, and psychological horror – that makes the stories different from one another, eliminating the feel of being repeated. Fresh and unique! To me, that was what freaked me out the most. This idea that these ghost like shadows and doppelganger would stop at nothing to unravel the truth even at the cost of their own lives and sanity, which gives the book unhinged vibes that I loved! I also enjoyed some of the spooky imagery relating to the supernatural presences in the book and appreciated the horror genre references sprinkled throughout! Every character, main or side one, made their voices heard, though at times in cases of shadows and doppelgangers felt very similar to one another. Yet diversified takes precedence over all. They were catalytic, not just mute spectators. This collection should be converted into English as soon as possible. Overall, it was such an enjoyable read. The ending of all stories was clear, except for a fewer ones that were vogue and a bit chaotic. But otherwise, I would HIGHLY recommend it to all spooky/horror book lovers.
