My mother’s war

By Dhanuka Dickwella

Nature is resilient and savvy

Determined and leavy

Looking to reclaim

The space invaded by us humans

She keeps sending her foot soldiers

In all forms and shapes

From all directions

To the battlefields of our garden.

The garden around the house

Often gets raided

By tens of plants and grass

That are not the favorites of my mother

She fights back

With all her skills and might

Mamoty, knives and hands

To defeat nature’s rogue forces

Her flowery soldiers and vegetable generals

Often falls and gets defeated

Annihilated by those greeny soldiers

Nature can send in numbers

The will of a woman

Whose mastery is fighting

Fighting anything life throws at her

Keeps raging daily

In my mother’s wars against invading weeds

  1. Dhanuka’s poem beautifully captures the ongoing battle between nature and human intervention in your mother’s garden. The vivid imagery of nature’s relentless “foot soldiers” and your mother’s determined fight using tools like “Mamoty, knives, and hands” creates a vivid picture of this struggle. The mention of “flowery soldiers” and “vegetable generals” adds a poetic touch, highlighting the resilience of both sides. The poem effectively portrays the continuous ebb and flow in the war between your mother and the invading forces of nature; which no grown son’s eye would capture, but truly a sensitive heart like Dhanuka’s would. Keep your penning skills shine and world awaiting for your glorious day!!
